DESCRIPTION

By blocking light entering your camera, our ND256 Filter allows you to use longer shutter speeds for long exposure and motion blur effects in harsh light.

With less light entering your camera, you can use wider apertures in harsh light for shallower depth of field without overexposing images.

Cinematographers can use our ND256 Filter to create more cinematic effects in harsh light without losing quality or overexposing the shot.

All our circular filters come with a protective travel tin case, a recycled cleaning cloth, and recycled plastic-free packaging.

How to Use

ND256 (8 Stop) Filter 2Peak

1/4

Find your filter size

Search your lens and find the diameter symbol Ø followed by a number e.g. Ø58 or Ø58mm). This can be found on the front or side of your lens – this magic number is your filter size. Note: Your lens focal length (e.g. 18-55mm) is not your filter size.

ND256 (8 Stop) Filter 2Peak

2/4

Place flat and screw clockwise

Lovingly behold lens in one hand and place flat on lens. Gently screw clockwise until just firm. Do not over-tighten – that which goes on must one day come off.

ND256 (8 Stop) Filter 2Peak

3/4

Slow your shutter

The fixed f-stop darkening of your images allows a controlled slowing of your shutter speed for motion blur effects.

ND256 (8 Stop) Filter 2Peak

4/4

Open your aperture

Or, you can adjust for fixed f-stop darkening by opening up your aperture, which creates a shallower depth of field. You can also combine both exposure setting adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ND filter should I buy?

The best ND filter for your photography will depend on the effects you want to achieve, and the type of lens you’re using.

The first choice you need to make is whether to go for a fixed ND filter or a variable ND filter. A variable ND filter offers more options, which is great if you’re shooting in unpredictable or variable light conditions. A fixed ND provides a specific light reduction and works better with telephoto and wide-angle lenses. And in terms of choosing which range to buy, let the quality of your lenses guide your decision – 1Peak filters for entry-level, 2Peak for mid-tier, and 3Peak for professional lenses. The next choice you need to make is the level of light reduction you want. The higher the ND number, the more light it stops from reaching your camera sensor.

Should I buy a fixed or variable ND filter?

It depends on how, where and what you’ll be shooting.

Fixed ND filters block a fixed f-stop of light from entering your camera. Variable ND filters provide more flexibility and have a range of f-stops you can block by rotating the outer element. If you’re starting out with ND filters, we recommend a Variable ND so you have more flexibility while you’re learning how to shoot with an ND. If the light is likely to change often, a Variable ND saves you changing between fixed NDs each time.

Do I need to get an ND if I already have a CPL?

If you want to reduce the light that goes through your lens by more than 2 f-stops, yes.

While CPL filters polarize light to remove reflections and increase colour saturation, ND filters reduce the amount of light that makes it through to your camera’s sensor, which opens up opportunities to experiment with depth of field, slower shutter speeds and motion blur, even in bright conditions.

What are the best ND filters for wide-angle and telephoto lenses?

Any of our ND filters work with wide-angle lenses and we recommend our 3Peak range for telephoto lenses.

Our ND filters have ultra-slim rims to avoid any vignetting issues. We suggest you use the quality of your lens to guide which range of ND filter you buy and go for the 3Peak range for telephoto lenses. Because of the amount of glass in telephoto lenses, using our 3Peak ND filters will provide the best possible image quality.

What's the difference between Japanese glass and SCHOTT glass?

The main difference is that SCHOTT glass has slightly better light transmission.

German Schott B270 optical glass is highly resistant to solar radiation and offers high transmittance in the visible wavelength range. It also has high chemical stability and a fire-polished surface providing excellent image sharpness. Our Premium Japanese Optical glass is also a very high-quality optical glass with a very similar light transmission – 99.6% versus the German Schott B270’s 99.8% light transmission. It is very hard to see the difference in image quality unless using telephoto lenses (focal length >100mm) or enlarging images to be printed in large formats.

"Superb quality, no colour cast and it plants 5 trees – what more would you want from an ND filter?" – Andy bought our ND256 2Peak.
