DESCRIPTION

By blocking 1 to 8.66 f-stops, you can use wider apertures in variable light for shallower depth of field effects, and slower shutter speeds for long exposure effects without overexposing your images.

Cinematographers can use our ND2–400 Variable ND Filter to create more cinematic effects in low and bright light.

How to Use

Variable ND2-400 (1-8.65 Stop) Filter

1/5

Find your filter size
Inquisitively search lens for diameter symbol. Ø often marks the spot. The diameter you seek may be accompanied by a number – Ø58 or Ø58mm. Look to the side and the front – this precious number is your filter size. Be warned: your lens focal length (e.g. 18-55mm) is not your filter size.
Variable ND2-400 (1-8.65 Stop) Filter

2/5

Place flat and screw clockwise
Excitedly behold lens in one hand and place flat on lens. Gently screw clockwise until just firm. Do not over-tighten – that which goes on must one day come off.
Variable ND2-400 (1-8.65 Stop) Filter

3/5

Slow your shutter
The 1 to 8.66 f-stop darkening of your images allows you to slow your shutter speed for motion blur effects.
Variable ND2-400 (1-8.65 Stop) Filter

4/5

Open your aperture
Or, you can adjust for the darkening by opening up your aperture, which creates a shallower depth of field. You can also combine both exposure setting adjustments.
Variable ND2-400 (1-8.65 Stop) Filter

5/5

Get more cinematic
Use our ND2–400 to create more cinematic effects when filming. By blocking 1 to 8.66 f-stops of light, you can open your aperture for a shallower depth of field, creating stunning cinematic effects in different and changing light conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Variable ND Filter should I buy?

It depends on the conditions you’ll be shooting in and the effects you want to achieve.

Our Variable ND2-32 is made for low-light, our Variable ND2-400 and ND8-128 are for low-light and bright light, and our ND64-1000 is specifically for harsh bright light and long exposure.

Should I buy a fixed or variable ND filter?

It depends on how, where and what you’ll be shooting.

Fixed ND filters block a fixed f-stop of light from entering your camera. Variable ND filters provide more flexibility and have a range of f-stops you can block by rotating the outer element. If you’re starting out with ND filters, we recommend a Variable ND so you have more flexibility while you’re learning how to shoot with an ND. If the light is likely to change often, a Variable ND saves you changing between fixed NDs each time.

Do Urth ND filters have a colour cast?

No, they have great colour neutrality.

There are a couple of reasons your images may show a slight colour cast when using an ND filter. Check your white balance settings. By restricting the light entering your camera, it may throw out your white balance settings. Manually adjust your white balance settings to reduce any colour cast.

What’s the best Variable ND filter for wide-angle and telephoto lenses?

Our whole range of Fixed ND Filters work with wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

Our ND filters have ultra-slim rims to avoid any vignetting issues. Our Fixed ND Filters are all in our professional Plus+ range and use the world’s best glass, making them perfect for wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

Do I need to step-up my lens cap for Urth Variable ND Filters?

No, our Variable ND Filters take the same size lens cap.

If your lens takes a 67mm Urth Variable ND Filter, your 67mm lens cap will fit perfectly. Some variable ND filters require you to step-up a size, but not Urth.

“Great for video and stills. Probably the most useful tool in my camera bag.” – Jo bought our ND2-400.

Love it. Great value and quality.

Amazing product. The huge range allows me to take a bunch of different timed photos without constantly switching filters.

Only bad thing I can think of is the screw off lid on the metal case. Taking it off can be challenging. Especially in winter with gloves on.

Used on Nikon Z6 shooting 4K video

Very versatile ND that has proved to be my go to filter. Consistent results on both my 14-30 with 82mm ND and 24-70 with 72mm ND

Great quality at a sensible price. Won't break the bank if you drop it and has to be replaced.

A must have for all your favourite glass!

I've tried so many different V-ND's over the years and these are by far my favourite for video.

For on a gimbal or on the fly set ups to fully rigged kits these filters work and rotate the smoothest I've found on any set up for setting perfect exposure. I run lenses from 58mm all the way up to 82mm and these filters accomodate to a massive range of different filter threads. Very little to no colour casting so your usual colour grading will still run like it should. I've dropped them, sat on them, put them in my pocket and they still work like they did on day 1. Great people in the background always willing to help with your purchase too. Legends.
